We have recently obtained a selection of various items associated with the school, some of which are giving rise to a great deal of speculation as none of the current membership is aware of their significance or origin. Of particular interest is the blazer that is extremely ornate and sports a wire embroidered badge with the school motto.

There has been considerable speculation amongst the members as to its origins; all we know is that it was discovered inside a box bearing a picture of Meakers, the school outfitters that used to be in East Street.

I can now reveal that this blazer was owned by Charles Howard, whose son Andrew, himself a former pupil, donated the blazer after discovering it in his father’s effects after his death in 2001. His father had been an original pupil at the school when it opened in 1928 and went on to run Charles Howard and Sons, photographers in Eastgate, a business founded by his father in 1907.

The blazer is an original Old Boys Association Blazer from 1932, when the accompanying tie consisted of a dark blue, light blue, and brown stripe – colours borrowed from the universities of Oxford, Cambridge and London.

I have recently been sent this wonderful photograph of Charles Howard wearing the blazer shown in the collection to the side of this article and reproduced by kind permission of his sons John and Andrew who both attended the school.
